'Learning
is the process of acquiring knowledge, skills, attitudes,
or values, through study,
experience, or teaching, that causes a change in behavior
that is persistent, measurable, and specified or allows
an individual to formulate a new mental construct or revise
a prior mental construct . Basic learning processes are
knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis,
and evaluation.
Learning
resulting from the use of computers is generally described
as the use of software-driven
resources with human interaction (email,
chat, face-to-face encounters, and/or television) or
use of software-driven resources with other educational
resources
(TV, radio, books, tapes, etc.). Learning in virtual
environments takes place through the use of computers,
media, the Internet,
and from effective online instruction. Learners
construct their knowledge through dialogue, interaction,
and collaborative activities.' (Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia, 2006)
The CKS has two primary objectives for instructional materials. One is to provide
students with access to a searchable database of
instructional
materials
such
as
interactive
documents,
tutorials, study quizzes, flashcards, and interactive puzzles
that are associated with learning outcomes in various academic
courses. The other is to make students aware of open source
software applications that hopefully facilitate learning
and can be associated
with course content when used for note-taking,
collaboration, assignments, and for improving test-taking skills.
Some of the software applications listed below are open source
(OS), free (F), shareware (SW), or licensed to the eLearning
Unit (ELU) for campus-wide or limited use and are cross-platform
or only for the Windows or Macintosh operating system. With
the exception of applications licensed to the eLearning Unit
(ELU), the CKS
takes no responsibility in the downloading of these applications.
Furthermore, the CKS does not promote one application over
the other. These applications have been used by students
and CKS staff for media development; however, the use, download,
and installation of these applications are the responsibilities
of the users of this website.
