Be Willing to Be Engaged, Study, Learn, Apply, and Succeed

'We all learn best in our own ways. Some people do better studying one subject at a time, while some do better studying three things at once. Some people do best studying in structured, linear way, while others do best jumping around, ''surrounding'' a subject rather than traversing it. Some people prefer to learn by manipulating models, and others by reading.' (Gates, n.d.)

To master the learning objectives that your instructors have established for you in your academic classes, you must know..

  • your individual learning style
  • what is expected of you in class
  • how to listen
  • how to take notes
  • study strategies that best suit you
  • how to ask and answer questions
  • how to take tests
  • how to apply what you have learned in class
  • ow to express yourself verbally as well as in writing

Open Source Software Applications for Facilitating Learning

'Learning is the process of acquiring knowledge, skills, attitudes, or values, through study, experience, or teaching, that causes a change in behavior that is persistent, measurable, and specified or allows an individual to formulate a new mental construct or revise a prior mental construct . Basic learning processes are knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.

Learning resulting from the use of computers is generally described as the use of software-driven resources with human interaction (email, chat, face-to-face encounters, and/or television) or use of software-driven resources with other educational resources (TV, radio, books, tapes, etc.). Learning in virtual environments takes place through the use of computers, media, the Internet, and from effective online instruction. Learners construct their knowledge through dialogue, interaction, and collaborative activities.' (Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia, 2006)

The CKS has two primary objectives for instructional materials. One is to provide students with access to a searchable database of instructional materials such as interactive documents, tutorials, study quizzes, flashcards, and interactive puzzles that are associated with learning outcomes in various academic courses. The other is to make students aware of open source software applications that hopefully facilitate learning and can be associated with course content when used for note-taking, collaboration, assignments, and for improving test-taking skills. Some of the software applications listed below are open source (OS), free (F), shareware (SW), or licensed to the eLearning Unit (ELU) for campus-wide or limited use and are cross-platform or only for the Windows or Macintosh operating system. With the exception of applications licensed to the eLearning Unit (ELU), the CKS takes no responsibility in the downloading of these applications. Furthermore, the CKS does not promote one application over the other. These applications have been used by students and CKS staff for media development; however, the use, download, and installation of these applications are the responsibilities of the users of this website.
